Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, totally worn out, shouting "Wow...What a Ride!"

NM/Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument & Santa Fe

September 29-October 4, 2018

Our next stop was just an overnight on the way to Cochiti Lake NM. We’re not much into KOA’s but the Tucumcari KOA was fine for an overnight. Long pull through sites where you could stay hitched up if you wanted. We all decided that dinner in town that night would be a good idea. Del’s Restaurant was an excellent choice serving Mexican and American dishes, we all walked away with happy bellies.

The next day we were up and on the way to Cochiti Lake, a place I’ve been wanting to go since I read my friend Ingrid’s Live Laugh RV blog about the great hike in the area. Curt and I had decided to reserve some dry camping sites at Cochiti Lake COE, we reserved site 78 knowing our friends Debbie & Steve had fit so we had to. Do to the placing of the fencing, wanting to access all the basement doors and a very deep bedroom slide there ended up being about a 6” area we could fit into. Once in it was a great site but boy the precision placing you have do can get comical. Curt and Glenda had reserved site 77 next to us, they couldn’t get their slides open and walk around their coach, they ended up in site 73 another beautiful site on the lake.

As has become the norm the past few weeks we spend part of a day in Santa Fe, we thought we’d walk around the historic plaza, do some geocaching and find a brewery.
The Santa Fe Plaza is a marketing area on the streets that surround plaza, local craftspeople sell their wares in some of the areas.

Never know where your name will turn up

Of course there’s always a geocache to find, this one you had to go to the concierge desk and ask for it. Found a trackable here, going to let it go on the adventure with us for the next year.

Of course the day in town wouldn’t be complete without tasting some beer, on this trip Curt and Dave tried Second Street Brewery. I think they enjoyed themselves, the food was okay but not necessary to repeat.
The Kash-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a place I’ve been looking forward to for a few years, we’ve had reservations before and had to cancel them. When Curt and I first started talking about traveling together and he mentioned Lake Cochiti, I told him we’d travel this far west with them before heading back south and east to TX. Dave and I thoroughly enjoy hiking slot canyons, Curt and Glenda have never hiked in slot canyons before, and after this hike I think they’ll be hiking more of them where they can. The trail goes through a slot canyon trail is about a mile long with a steep but doable climb at the top. Something checked off the bucket list.

Lake Cochiti COE hid a cache on the property which we got out on a walk, Dave must have not brought the camera. When mutual friends Steve and Debbie of  Down the Road heard we were in the area they let us know of a cache they hid nearby, of course we had to get it.
This is as far west as we go, from here we head southeast and Curt and Glenda head southwest. What a great time we’ve had over the last 3 weeks, we look forward to our next adventure together, unfortunately it’ll be another year at least till our travel paths might cross.  We’ve had a blast sharing adventure and making memories, great friends = great memories. We're going to miss you guys.

Until next time…

  2. You're doing a great job keeping your blog up to date. Cochiti Lake COE was a great experience in boondocking. And the tent rocks and slot canyon were incredible. First time in Santa Fe too. Missing you guys but getting set up here in Gold Canyon is keeping us busy. Our paths will cross again and new adventures will begin. Have fun at the rally and in Port Aransas.

  5. That was such a fun place! The campground was nice too. Tight, but pretty cool. Ingrid was right, what a great hike. Glad you guys found our cache. One of these days we hope to winter in TX instead of AZ. Love to see the Padres.

    1. Loved the hike and knew if you'd been in the site we could do it. Glad to find one of your caches, I'll have to look for some more. When we're in TX we miss AZ, when we're in AZ we miss TX, which is why we bounce between the two.
