Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, totally worn out, shouting "Wow...What a Ride!"

March 18-30, 2019

March 18-22

After a 206 mile ride we arrived at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake in Orlando. Site 7 was one of a just a few full hook up sites in the park. Like lots of the sites in the small campground it wasn’t real level but it served the purpose for the time we were there. For $23/night it was a deal. While the campground is small there were plenty of roads and a trail circling the park that gave us a chance for some decent walks.

Upon arrival as Dave walked around looking at the rv he noticed one the welds on the spring mounts had broken. Back in September 2017 we had a break down when we lost a cam plate. When making roadside repair Dave had to do some heavy pounding on the spring mount to straighten it out. The weld on the spring mount finally gave way, so we finding a welder was of utmost importance.  After a few phone calls we found Mid FL Welding. The next day they came out and soon had us road ready.

We came to Orlando so we could visit Epcot and Animal Kingdom at Disney World. We took our boys there back in 1996 but have never been back since. Last year while making reservations I didn’t even consider that it would be spring break time. Good thing we weren’t doing rides as the lines for those were quite long. We enjoyed our two days at the parks but the traffic getting there and back was crazy, don’t know if we’ll ever try Orlando again.

My father has fondly called my mom Mary Poppins for years, practically perfect in every way.

A model railraod garden in Disney, my dad has been a model railroad collector for as long as I can remember.

Tree of Life, while not a real tree the carvings were exquisite. The more you looked the more you saw.

Our friends Terry and Owen reached out to us while in Orlando, they have a winter rv place south of Orlando and invited us over for a prime rib meal. We first met Terry and Owen when they were our tail gunners on our AK caravan, we hadn’t seen them since April 2017 so it was great to catch up with them. Thanks again for a great lunch.

From the sign you'd expect a sit down meal. Nope, but good food none the less.

March 23-26
We finally escaped from Orlando and headed 47 miles north to Blue Springs State Park in Orande. Once again an unlevel site but not as bad as many we saw when walking the park.  Good to be back in a state park.

Blue Spring State Park is a haven for manatee in the winter time. The spring remains a constant 70 all year long. Since the weather has been warm most of them have left though we did see a few. Lots of families come for the day to the park and with the nice weather lots of folks were swimming in the springs, which is only allowed when the manatee have left.

One last main attraction to see was The Kennedy Space Center. A fun day was spent wandering the grounds and seeing the sites.

March 27-30

Stephen Foster Folk Cultural State Park on the Suwanee River was our last stop in FL. A beautiful park with immaculate grounds and nice level sites. The park is named for the composer Stephen Foster who wrote the legendary song “Old Folks At Home” which made the Suwanee River famous.

On the grounds is the Carillon Tower with the largest Carillon bells. 4 times a day the bells chime and music from some of Foster’s songs is also played.

A nice 4.5 mike walk.

Such a nice place we just had to have a fire, our first in a over a month. Of course we had to have a wannadinger dinner.
On Friday nigths at the town visitor center a local folk group comes in to jam. So nice to see the younger generation participating.

We spent a nice 4 nights here decompressing from the craziness of the last few weeks. On to Georgia!!!

Until next time…

  2. We could do without all the throngs of people but it is always fun to see gators and manatees. Great shot of the woodpecker, that is one of my favorite birds.

    1. We're not fans of the hordes of people but one last time in FL we braved it. Everyone was after the woodpecker shot.

  3. I so want to go to Disney next winter when we're in Florida, but man, between the prices and the crowds and the traffic, it's gonna be hard to justify dealing with all that aggravation. We'll see... What I have no doubt about is the awesome Florida state parks. All of your camping pictures have me drooling. Florida parks just do it right.... We were on the Suwanee River a couple years ago, but not that particular park. We may have to check it out next year. Who knew you could listen to a bells concert while camping??

  4. That was quite a couple of weeks. You can't beat prime rib friends. I would love to see manatee someday.
