Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, totally worn out, shouting "Wow...What a Ride!"

Our Last Days in Idaho

June 8-11, 2016

On Wednesday we moved up the eastern edge of Idaho to Henry Lake State Park in Park Island ID. A short 3 hour ride and we arrived at what will probably be our last state park until after our caravan trip. We are in site 43 in the Caddis loop which is the newest loop, we have 50 amp service and water, the back of our site overlooks the lake. While the sites are in the open and lined up in a row each site has ample room and you don't feel like you're on top of each other. With mountain views all around it's a beautiful place to call home for a few days. We like this park enough to put it on the list of maybe trying to workamp at in the future.

A few of our neighbors :)

Thursday we decided to drive into Yellowstone through the west entrance, we should have gotten out earlier, the crowds were out and once we started stopping to look at geysers there were masses of people. We dealt with it for awhile and also got a two mile hike in to Mystic Falls. Next week we'll be near the north entrance and we'll just get our days started earlier.

After our not so fun time at Yellowstone we stopped in at Mack's Inn which is a short distance south of our park. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River is there with a boat launch and rental of all types of water vessels, we asked if they provided shuttle service. They did and told us where the boat launch up river was which we decided to check out. After checking out the boat launch just up the road we found the spring that feeds the waterway. Crystal clear cold water, what a beautiful site.

Friday we got out on the water, no crowds and surrounded by nature, what more could we ask for. This is just one of 3 moose we saw, one even had a calf with her. Dave tried fishing but didn't have any flies just lures so the fish one on this day.

Saturday was a much cooler day and rain was forecast, we took a 5 mile power walk and decided to stay in the park all day. Tomorrow is a travel day, on to Gardiner MT.

Until next time...

  1. Well said, when surrounded by nature you could not ask for more. I have read so many sad/horror stories of crowds and their behavior in Yellowstone. Im so glad we were there 9 years ago and had fewer visitors then.
I would like to stay at that park as the birds will really keep me busy.

    1. If we ever do Yellowstone again it will be during the off season. You'd love the area, birds galore for you and no hiking required.

  2. Wow, what great wildlife pictures! We hope to get there yet this fall on our way back to Salt Lake.

  3. The summer crowds at YNP are sad ... but then that seems to be the case at all of our NPs. I really to understand that for most -- esp families -- it's the only time they can go to these places, but we are loving them to death and the experience for future visitors is not going to be nearly as great. Look at how many of them have had to implement a shuttle system to get around. We've been to YNP in all seasons, and summer was our least favorite time because of the crowds.

    1. We won't do Yellowstone in the summer again, if we come back it'll be in an off season, not sure I'd come here in the winter.

  4. Love the wildlife photos. We found the same thing at Zion and Bryce Canyon...you have to get out early. Looking forward to seeing your Alaska photos.

    1. Another month and we'll be starting the Alaska caravan. Glad Yellowstone is the only national park this summer.

  5. I just found your blog and will have to spend some time reading more when we get settled. What a great find with a shuttle for your paddling. We were lucky while in Yosemite to get out early in the day and season to avoid much of the crowds. I look forward to following you as you head north. We are in California heading north.

    1. Welcome aboard, we were lucky to find the shuttle. We used to drive two vehicles but gave that up last fall. Got out earlier in the park this last week so that worked better.

  6. Really looks like a great campground. Love your site. Yellowstone is so fabulous. I hope you have better luck earlier in the day. Really nice paddle. I'd love to do it. Moose, how cool. Thanks for letting me know about the shuttle. I take it you used it?

    1. Yes we did use the shuttle since we no longer drive two vehicles. We did have better luck this past week in Yellowstone.

  7. I think it's impossible to take a bad picture there. Love it. Nice you got to get on the river for some kayaking. Did you notice Baker's Hole NF CG when using the west entrance? It's about 4 miles out of town. Great CG on the river. Have fun on your next leg.
