Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, totally worn out, shouting "Wow...What a Ride!"

Hiking in Capitol Reef NP

May 19-21, 2016

Thursday was once again move day. In order to avoid the 10-12% grades on Scenic Byway UT 12 we did a little backtracking, UT 12 to Rt 89 to UT 62 to UT 24, no steep grades and some beautiful scenery. We stayed at Thousand Lakes RV Park, about 10 miles from Capitol Reef, as you can see we couldn't use the fire pit since the neighbors slide was over it, poor planning on the parks part.  The rv park was nice but there's no Verizon signal and their internet wasn't that great, I'm way behind on blog reading.

We arrived early on Thursday so we were able to get a few hikes in. Our first hike was the Grand Wash hike, listed as easy this hike follows a large wash for 2 miles ending near the Cassidy Arch trail.

This poor sheep had a broken foot, don't know how he got down in the wash but he clearly wasn't climbing back out.

After the Grand Wash we stopped at a pull over area where there were numerous Petroglyphs.

The final area we visited was Goosenecks and Sunset Point.

Friday morning our warm up hike was to Hickman Natural Bridge, a  moderate 2 miles (round trip) trail with about 400' elevation gain.

Our big hike of the day was to Cassidy Arch, a strenuous 3.4 (round trip) trail with 900' of elevation gain.

Saturday we decided to take it easy and do just one hike. Chimney Rock hike is 3.7 (round trip) strenuous hike with 700' elevation gain.

Until next time...

  5. Wonderful pictures of hikes we also took in one of my very favorite parks in Utah. Thanks so much for the memories. I hope there is water and food for the poor sheep.

    1. Capitol Reef is a beautiful park, glad we took the time to check it out. The sheep was eating vegetation and there is a bit of water in the wash, at least for now.

  7. Glad you enjoyed the hike and all the trails you took were strenuous! But I did not see pics of the scenic drive to Capitol Gorge :)
I find it funny when you said you are behind from blog reading cause Im way too behind from blog writing.
I know what you mean by those fire pits, and I agree lack of planning design. But did you go to their gift shop?
