Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, totally worn out, shouting "Wow...What a Ride!"

Made it to CO!!!

We have been traveling across KS & CO the last few days, I went ahead and joined Passport America to take advantage of some cheap overnights. Our first night was in Russell KS at the Triple J RV Park, the park sufficed for what we needed and gave us a beautiful sunset to finish our day.

Our second night was in Stratton CO at Marshall Ash Village, not a place I'm inclined to return to, noisy truck stop across the street and we were the only overnighters there. There were a few older rigs that had seen better days and us,  so we closed the blinds and we were where ever we wanted to be.

We were up and on the road a little after 8am, we've had head winds for the last 3 days so we've been taking it easy and letting every one pass us, can't remember the last time we passed someone. We arrived at Cheyenne Mountain State Park about 11am. All was going well until my klutzy self emerged and I fell down,
fortunately I just bruised the foot, ice and ibuprofen have helped. The sites here are walk in only this time of the year and they keep one loop open, though they did say they could open the other if needed. With the day access pass for the second vehicle it is $31 a night for full hookups, huge sites and views to go with them. We are here for at least 5 nights and watching the weather to see when we will leave, our next drive day has Raton Pass in NM in it so want a good driving day.

Our views looking towards Colorado Springs and Fort Carson, we have NORAD inside Cheyenne Mountain

We've spoken to Tom and he has class tonight and is busy studying so we'll see him tomorrow, tonight we are headed to my brothers home for dinner with him and his family. We will be bring our camera and see if he can do anything about the streak we have in it, if not he'll give us some good advice on getting a new one while we're here.

Until next time...

  1. That's a great park. Wonderful view of the C Springs lights at night and of the mountains during the day. Enjoy your stay. Hope you don't see any snow.

    1. Thanks we are enjoying the views, so far the forecast looks good until after the weekend when there is snow predicted but we'll be out of here by then.

  2. We too have found Passport America well worth the cost. Some campgrounds are wonderful and some not so much but for overnights they can hardly be beat. I'm just amazed that you are in Colorado in November. I was hoping to go to Rocky Mountain National Park in 2014 and cannot figure out how to do it without having either snow or far too many other visitors.

    1. So far the daytime temps have been in the 50's &60's but the wind makes it feel colder, it was 34 when we got up this morning but the fireplace kept the us nice and warm overnight. Haven't camped in Rocky Mountain NP since '76 when we came in shortly after the Big Thompson Canyon flood, we visited about 10 years back for a day to introduce Dave to the park. It was July and we found snow, enough for the boys to have snowball fights and for a few die hard snowboards to run down. I'll talk with my brother and see if he can recommend a time to visit.

    1. Yes it seems Passport will work on our moving days, the mission is to see the kids (CO & AZ) then be on the Gulf Coast by 12/16 so still lots more driving (2300 miles or so) but all worth it. We've gotten the sunshine but the winds keep going crazy. Hope to see you on the Gulf.

    1. Thanks, the foot has turned lovely shades of purple but feels better, it could have been so much worse. Loving the views, dense fog this morning so we couldn't even see the city but have enjoyed the sparkling lights of it in the evening.

  5. Nothing beats state and federal parks but when you're traveling from point A to point B, it sure is nice to have an inexpensive PA park to overnight in. Hope the wind dies down and you have a safe trip.

    1. It does appear that the PA parks are ones to overnight in not to settle in. Serves the purpose and is affordable. Hope the winds die before we head over Raton on Saturday.

  6. Nice pictures & great views. What is the elevation where you are at? and What is a PA park?

    1. We are at 6500+ and will go higher as we cross Raton Pass in NM on Saturday. PA is a discount membership that gives 1/2 price on campgrounds. The ones we've stayed at have been fine for an overnighter but nothing to stay awhile at, so far they have been just off the interstate and have been under $20/night. There are only 5 campgrounds that participate in VT, NH & ME have some and they may not honor it during their high season-each campground sets their own offerings

  7. You should sleep well knowing NORAD is beneath you.
